Amazon to add 3,000 completely new jobs in Vancouver in tech hub expansion

VANCOUVER — Online retail giant Amazon has announced it will extend its Vancouver technology switch and create 3,000 new high-tech jobs.

Amazon’s general manager involving web services Jesse Dougherty mentioned the new corporate positions are going to be focused on e-commerce technology, cloud computer and machine learning. Employees will be working in a new 37,000 square metre office wind generator tower the company plants to build on the spot of the city’s old tn post office.

The structure’s architectural heritage will probably be preserved, and the tower is anticipated to open in 2022, Dougherty said Tuesday outside the former Canada Publish building.

“We chose to develop and grow in Europe because we recognize the diverse and exceptionally talented staff here,” he said.

“As a homegrown British Columbian and a software electrical engineer, I am so proud of located and working in a city that’s recognized worldwide as a first-rate world tech hub.”

Amazon opened it’s first software development web site in Vancouver in 2011 and now has more than 1,500 employees.

Dougherty said the company can build on its relationships using top Canadian universities, that he or she said are producing some of the best computer engineering students in the world.

“We’onal hired many graduates out of schools right here in Bc,” he said, citing the Institution of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University and also universities of Toronto, Waterloo, in addition to McGill.

The company is expected to announce it is second North American headquarters, named HQ2, sometime this year, with Toronto as the only Canadian city on the list of 20 finalists.
