Nestl, Unilever and others form animal wellbeing coalition

Seven companies including Nestl, Unilever and Ikea Food items Services have joined forces to build the Global Coalition for Animal Welfare (GCAW), which will aim to advance the worldwide welfare standard of critters in the food supply chain.

Aramark, Compass Party, Elior Group and Sodexo are also part of a GCAW, and all companies involved in the coalition is appropriate with animal welfare industry experts to accelerate the development of great welfare standards.

According to stats provided by the GCAW, more than 70 thousand animals are farmed pertaining to food annually, with over 70% these living in intensive systems, normally experiencing poor welfare principles.

GCAW members have established five core goals to address this issue: Cage-free guidelines, improved broiler chicken welfare, farmed fish welfare, antimicrobial resistance, and global standards regarding transportation and slaughter.

A statement unveiled by GCAW says that the coalition is designed “to publish an agenda for modify during the first half of 2019.”

The coalition mentioned that the global food procedure “must maintain high stages of food safety for pet ingredients, address challenges such as antimicrobial resistance and minimize the environmental impact of new tactics.”

Three strategies will be implemented from the GCAW to advance animal welfare standards. Firstly, members will provide “your platform for food organizations to work more closely along with farm animal welfare experts to identify common objectives and drive improvements”.

Additionally, members will prioritise welfare issues and develop routes for industry change “despite the fact that supporting producers in implementing strong animal welfare practices”.

Finally, members will attempt to advance animal survival knowledge globally “through industry insights, bespoke research together with partnerships for action.”
